Palabea connects people who share the same interests in learning languages and in discovering different cultures. People from all over the world can communicate via audio chat, video chat and text messages to practice foreign languages, to support others and of course to develop friendships around the world. This website enables students to create a profile and select which languages they speak and which languages they would like to learn. Users can also upload documents, pictures,and videos. Not only are participants pupils but they are teachers as well by teaching each other their native tongue. Palabea also offers learning and training video lessons and podcasts, virtual classrooms, and online teachers. This website would apply mostly to high schoolers and adult students. Also with this website, if participants wanted to further learn their language of choice after high school, Palabea provides a list of some the best language schools in the world.

iearn Collaboration Centre

Media iearn is a website that allows people from all over the world to work on various projects. By picking a project that interests you and applying your natural talents, you can be part of something great. Books are illustrated and written, history is researched, etc... Media iearn allows you to be a creator of a project or jump in with someone else. You can choose the appropriate age bracket. Teachers, parents, and students collaborated to create projects and work together. It is truly a global affair. Projects must be submitted for review, and it is recommended you participate in a project before beginning your own.

MapSkip

Using a Google map as the background, MapSkip users can add stories, photos, and sounds from all over the world. Membership is free, and it is easy to add your information to the community maps. This is a great review of MapSkip from TeachersFirst.com that includes ideas for use in the classroom. Other ideas can be found on the MapSkip blog.

MeGlobe

Meglobe is a free web client that lets you type in your own language, but sends a translated version, in near real time, specific to the native tongue of whomever you are chatting with. With Meglobe there is no such thing as 'lost in translation.'
Can you imagine the possibilities of being able to communicate with almost anyone, anywhere with no language barriers. I can't wait to try this with Chiara, my former graduate assistant who lives in Italy. Although her English is great, I'm sure it will be easier for her to communicate in her native language. Watch the tutorial below to get a better idea of how Meglobe works.

The Global Education Collaborative

The Global Education Collaborative is a community for teachers and students interested in global education. Members can contribute by adding media, conversation, and collaborative project ideas. I look forward to exploring this site for ideas and projects to use with a global curriculum.
This site was created with Ning, a tool that allows you to create your own social network on any topic. I have used Ning for TeacherPop, a social network for preservice and inservice teacher. It is super easy to set up and modify - I highly recommend it.
